A gappers list and a top gainers list can look alike at 9:31 and very different by noon. The gap is fixed at the open. Change today keeps moving. Put both columns side by side and you see which gappers held:
| Stock | Gap at open | Change at 11:00 | What it says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock A | +12% | +15% | Gap held and extended |
| Stock B | +9% | +2% | Most of the gap gave back |
| Stock C | +6% | -1% | Gap filled, now red |
Example numbers, not a real trade
Rank by Gap (%), add a Volume Today (Shares) minimum like 300,000 shares and a Relative Volume minimum to skip thin names. Top Lists (Screeners) refresh every 15 seconds. Looking for the biggest movers whatever the open? That is the top gainers scanner.
Today’s gappers list is handy in the moment, but it is also a free record of what worked. Traders who get better at gaps usually keep notes on it.
Here is a plain way to do that. At 11:00 a.m. ET, look at the top ten gappers and write three things next to each: the gap at the open, the change at 11:00, and the reason for the gap. After a month you will see patterns in your own market, not someone else’s. Maybe earnings gaps over 10% in stocks under $20 held more often than you guessed. Maybe gaps on analyst upgrades faded by lunch.
A recipe for the list itself: sort by gap percent, volume today of at least 300,000 shares, relative volume of 1.5 or more, and leave out anything under $1. The list refreshes every 15 seconds, so the order changes as volume comes in during the first half hour.
Example, made-up numbers. At 9:45 three names lead the list. Stock D gapped 18% on a buyout rumor. Stock E gapped 11% on earnings. Stock F gapped 9% because its sector moved. By 11:00, D is up 4% because the rumor got denied, E is up 14% and still climbing, and F is flat. Your notes say: earnings held, rumor faded, sector move went nowhere. Do that for twenty mornings and you start trusting your own read.
The gap column also helps when you come in late. Walk in at 10:30 and the change column only tells you where a stock is now. The gap column tells you where it started, so you can see in a second whether the stock is holding the open or bleeding it.
And when a gapper is filling fast, you don’t need to guess. That’s what the gap reversal alert covers, and it fires once, the first time price crosses yesterday’s close.
If you only have ten minutes before work, here’s the short version. Pull up the list at 9:40, look at the top five, and ask one question of each: is it still above where it opened? The ones that are still above the open tend to be where the buyers are. The ones already below the open are where the sellers showed up early. That one question will save you from chasing a lot of tired gaps.

About the daily gappers list.
Stocks that open with a big gap from yesterday’s close. Traders usually mean the first 30 to 60 minutes of the session.
Top gainers rank change since yesterday’s close at this moment. The gappers list ranks the opening gap, so a stock can be a big gapper and not a top gainer by lunch.
Yes. The same list builds before the open from premarket prints. Save the Top List (Screener) and it’s your watchlist each morning.
The gap is measured against the prior close, so a fresh list starts building from the first premarket print each trading day.
