Investopedia: Best Short Term Stock Screener, 2024
Every site has a “most volatile” list. Most are a snapshot. Trade Ideas re-ranks the whole US market as it trades, and you decide what volatile means. Start a Top List (Screeners) and sort it by one of these:
Then add two guard rails: a Min Price of $1 with a Max of $10 if you want cheaper names, and a minimum average volume (Average Daily Volume (5 day) or average daily volume) so the list only shows stocks you can get in and out of. Top Lists update every 15 seconds.
Then watch it fire. Streaming Alerts (Scanner) add the live side. 5 Minute Wide Range Bar fires when a 5-minute bar is much wider than that stock’s own normal bar, so a quiet stock waking up shows up as it happens, not after the fact. 2 Minute Wide Range Bar and 15 Minute Wide Range Bar do the same on 2- and 15-minute bars.
| You want | Use |
|---|---|
| Biggest range today | Today's Range (%) or Today's Range ($) |
| Normal daily swing | Average True Range |
| Swinging all week | Range (5 day, %), Average Daily Volume (5 day) |
| Moving before the open | Post Market Volume |
| A bar much wider than normal, right now | 5 Minute Wide Range Bar |
Before 9:30, sort a premarket Top List by Post Market Volume and premarket range. Premarket prints are thin, so keep a volume floor and watch which names hold their range after the open. For gappers, the premarket gap scanner covers that side.
Same list, with price caps: Max Price $5 or $10. Cheap stocks often swing hardest and carry wider spreads, so the volume floor matters more here, not less. The small cap and low float scanners go deeper on those names.
Range alone isn’t enough for a day trade. You also need liquidity. Set a minimum average volume and a minimum price, then use ATR to size your stop. For the rest of a day-trading setup, see the day trading scanner.
Swap today’s range for Range (5 day, %) or Average Daily Volume (5 day). That ranks stocks by how much they’ve moved over five days, which is often a better watchlist for swing traders than one wild morning.
Volatility is one angle. Volume and direction are others: see unusual volume, the gap scanner, top gainers, high of day momentum, or every page on the stock scanners hub.
Volatile stocks carry higher risk, both ways. Trade Ideas shows what is moving now; it does not predict what will move next. Results are not typical.

It changes minute to minute, so a list written this morning is often stale by 9:35. Use a live Top List (Screener) sorted by Today’s Range % or ATR instead of a static list.
Three common ways: the intraday range (high minus low), ATR (Average True Range, the typical daily range), and historical volatility over a window like 5 days. Trade Ideas has a filter for each one.
Add a Max Price of $10 (or $5) and a minimum average volume to the same Top List. The volume floor keeps out names too thin to trade.
Yes. Use the premarket volatility and premarket range filters on a premarket Top List, then watch which names keep moving after the open.
They offer more movement and more risk. Use a liquidity floor and size your stops off ATR so a normal swing doesn’t knock you out.
