Real-Time Stock Market Data: Why Trade Ideas Is Different

Our own database stores every market event as it happens. That is what powers the scanner, the screener and Holly, and it is why OddsMaker TI Premium can backtest real events.

The Data Difference

Our real-time market database (and why OddsMaker can backtest it)

We can run OddsMaker because of our database technology. Trade Ideas stores the market’s events, not just its prices. Every alert as it fired and the filter values at that moment go into our own database. The scanner, the screener and Holly read those events live. OddsMaker tests the same stored events. Latency matters here too. Streaming Alerts (Scanner) show you the move as it starts to happen, in real time.

One database, one event engine. What you see live is what OddsMaker tests.

1 · The base layer

A custom database under the event engine

Live trades stream into the Trade Ideas database, which keeps years of history stacked underneath, and the event engine flags an event Live trades Custom database, refined over two decades for real-time precision. Event
Trades come in, the database keeps them, and the event engine works from it.

Under the event engine sits a proprietary database that Trade Ideas designed and custom-built from the ground up. We have kept modifying and improving it for more than two decades. Every one of the 308 alerts and 249 filters in our help is computed on it.

2 · Events, not snapshots

Built for what just happened

Most scanners wait on a static condition. Trade Ideas watches for what just happened and shows it to you while it still matters:

  • VWAP crossed: price punched through value at a specific instant.
  • Volume accelerated: participation spiked, not just “above average.”
  • New high at a moment: the breakout shows up when it happens, not at the end of the bar.

3 · Live, on your screen

Alerts on every trade, not on candle close.

Trade Ideas market data questions

What makes Trade Ideas market data different?

Trade Ideas runs live market data through its own database and event engine. Instead of taking snapshots of a static condition, it watches what just happened, such as a VWAP cross, a volume spike or a new high, and shows it while it still matters. Streaming Alerts, Top Lists (Screeners), Holly AI and OddsMaker all work from that same event stream.

Is Trade Ideas data real time?

Yes. Streaming Alerts can fire on every trade, which can be multiple times per second. Top Lists update every 15 seconds.

Does Trade Ideas use Nasdaq Basic?

No. Trade Ideas runs on real-time, tick-by-tick data from every US exchange, plus off-exchange trades and the national best bid and offer, not Nasdaq Basic. Nasdaq Basic is a lower-cost feed with Nasdaq’s own best bid and offer (not the national best bid and offer) and trades from Nasdaq plus off-exchange trades reported to the FINRA/Nasdaq TRF. It has no quotes or trades from NYSE, Cboe, IEX, MEMX, MIAX or the other exchanges. Some tools use Nasdaq Basic; TrendSpider’s status page, for example, described in September 2024 ‘replacing the stock market data provider with Nasdaq Basic’ (source). A fuller feed means more real events for the scanner to show and for OddsMaker to test.

Why can OddsMaker backtest real events?

Because the Trade Ideas database stores the events themselves: each alert as it fired and the filter values at that moment. OddsMaker replays those stored events across all stocks instead of fitting rules to decades of price bars. OddsMaker is part of TI Premium.

What is the Trade Ideas database?

A proprietary database Trade Ideas designed and built in-house. It is the base the event engine runs on, and it has been modified and improved for more than two decades. Every alert and filter is computed on it.

Can institutions get the raw data?

Yes. Quant funds and institutional desks can license the market-data and event engine as a raw or research-grade feed. It is the same infrastructure that runs the trader desk. Contact sales at info@trade-ideas.com.

Feel it live. Then test it on the same events.

The scanner is the interface. The market-data engine is the advantage.
