How Idea Surfing works, as described in the TI Pro User Guide. A diagram, not a screenshot.

Idea Surfing automatically scrolls through interesting symbols without you doing anything. Put your cursor on a chart to show interest and it stops; move the cursor away and it starts again. Idea Surfing is your TikTok for stocks.

Questions traders ask

Idea Surfing in TI Pro: one chart rotates on its own through AXP, PEP, COIN, SHOP and V, each with a longer-term inset at lower left. Real recording.

One quick look per chart

As Malcolm Gladwell describes in Blink, experienced people often size up a situation in the first couple of seconds, faster than they realize. Idea Surfing feeds that: it shows you one chart at a time, your eyes and gut pick out the setup, and the cursor is how you say ‘this one.’

  • A new stock loads every 7 seconds, paced so you are not flooded with symbols.
  • Hover your mouse over a chart and it pauses. Move the mouse away and it resumes.
  • It pulls the top stocks from your open Top Lists (Screeners), Holly Strategy Trades (TI Premium) and Price Alerts.
  • You can turn it off any time: Tools, Options, General, then clear Enable Idea Surfing.

Want two timeframes in each chart while it rotates? Turn on PiP charting, a separate feature.

What is Idea Surfing?

Think of it as TikTok for stocks: Idea Surfing shows you the ideas without you having to look. It is a TI Pro setting that loads stocks from your open scans onto your charts on its own, one every 7 seconds, so new candidates keep appearing while your attention is elsewhere.

Which stocks does Idea Surfing show?

The top three symbols of each open Top List (Screener), plus stocks from the Holly Strategy Trades window and the Price Alerts window. Holly Strategy Trades come from Holly AI Signals, a TI Premium feature.

How fast does it rotate?

Every 7 seconds. It is paced that way on purpose, so you can read each chart without being flooded with symbols.

How do I stop on a stock I like?

Hover your mouse over the chart. Idea Surfing pauses automatically while the mouse is over a chart and resumes when you move the mouse away. To jump to a specific stock yourself, click its symbol in any scan to send it to your charts.

Surf from idea to idea without losing the chart.
How does Idea Surfing use my stock screener?

Each open Top List, the Trade Ideas stock screener, feeds its top three symbols into the rotation. Change a Top List's filters and you change what Idea Surfing shows you.

Can Idea Surfing show premarket movers or momentum stocks?

Yes, if your Top Lists are set up for them. Open a premarket gapper list or a momentum list, such as one sorted on relative volume, and its leaders join the rotation.

How is Idea Surfing different from a stock scanner alert?

A stock scanner alert reports one event the moment it happens. Idea Surfing shows you charts of the stocks currently leading your screener and your alert windows, one look at a time, so you see the setup instead of a line of text.

Can I step through stocks by hand?

Yes. A click on a symbol in an Alert or Top List window sends it to your linked charts. Tools, Options, General lets you pick single-click or double-click, and enable the up and down arrow keys for moving through alerts.

How long has Idea Surfing been in Trade Ideas?

Since 2018, according to a November 2025 Trade Ideas blog post by CEO Dan Mirkin.

How do I switch Idea Surfing off completely?

Open Tools on the Toolbar, then Options, then General, and clear the Enable Idea Surfing box. Day to day, the Toolbar control toggles it between active and Paused.

Does Idea Surfing work with Picture in Picture charts?

Yes. Each stock it loads appears on every chart and every embedded timeframe at once, with your custom ranges kept. See Picture in Picture charts.
