Penny Stock Scanner That Skips the Thin, Untradable Names

Plenty of stocks trade under $5. Most of them you can’t get in and out of cleanly. Trade Ideas finds the ones moving on real volume and drops the thin, wide-spread names. It doesn’t pick stocks for you.

Price, then the filters that keep you out of trouble

  • Price: set a maximum of 5 for stocks under $5, or any range you trade.
  • Spread: skip stocks where the bid and ask are far apart. It’s measured in pennies, so 10 is a dime.
  • Dollar Volume: price times average volume, so you only see names with real money trading through them.
  • Relative Volume and Running Up Now: the stocks actually moving right now.
Key point

Low-priced stocks swing hard and can gap against you. Test your rules in a simulated account first. Streaming Alerts (Scanner) run in TI Pro, our desktop app for Windows (on a Mac, through Parallels). Top Lists (Screeners) also run in the Web Dashboard, right in your browser. Also see the low float scanner and the small cap scanner.

Penny Stock Scanner guide

What the penny stock scan finds

It finds stocks under $5, or any price range you set, that are moving on real volume with spreads you can trade.

It does not pick stocks. It shows what is moving, and you decide what, if anything, to trade.

Why spread and dollar volume matter more under $5

On a $2 stock, a 10-cent spread costs you 5% the moment you buy. On a $100 stock, the same dime is nothing.

Dollar Volume tells you how much money actually trades through the stock each day. A stock with plenty of shares but tiny dollar volume can still be hard to sell when you need to.

Set it up in 5 steps
  1. Set Price (Price) to a range like 1 to 5.
  2. Set Spread (Spread) to a max, like 5 cents.
  3. Add Dollar Volume (DV) so only names with real money trading through them show up.
  4. Add Relative Volume (RV) at 2 or more and sort by it.
  5. In TI Pro, add Running Up Now (RUN) and Halt (HALT) with the same filters.
Risks and common mistakes

Cheap stocks move a lot in percent terms, both ways. A few cents can be a big loss.

Many promoted penny stocks spike and fade fast. Volume alone doesn’t tell you why a stock is moving.

Test your rules in a simulated account before real money.

A real chart example
Trade Ideas 15 minute chart of BZUN, a stock near $3, making a new high with an alert marked
Real Trade Ideas chart: BZUN near $3 with a New High alert.

A stock around $3 climbing on steady volume, with the alert marking the new high. This is the kind of name the scan shows. Whether it is a trade is up to you.

Keep penny stock risk in check

Cheap stocks can move 20% in minutes, both ways. Use Spread to drop names where the gap between bid and ask eats your edge. Use Dollar Volume so you are not the biggest trader in the stock. Smaller size per trade helps when a penny stock halts or reverses fast.

What is the penny stock scanner?

It is a Trade Ideas scanner with the Price filter set to the range you trade, plus spread and volume filters that drop names you can’t trade cleanly. It shows what is moving. It does not tell you what to buy.

Is there a free penny stock screener?

You can try it with a free account, just an email, no card. Live access is for a limited time.

You can set the Price filter to any range, like $1 to $5, or under $10. Pick the range that fits your rules and your account size. Lower prices often mean wider spreads and bigger swings, so set the Spread filter too.

Will it give me penny stocks to watch?

It gives you a list of low-priced stocks moving on real volume right now. What to trade is your call. Test your rules in a simulated account first.

Add Relative Volume so the list only shows stocks trading well above their normal volume. A low-priced stock with no volume can sit still for days. Trade Ideas shows you what is moving; it does not tell you what will move next.

Why filter out wide spreads?

On a $2 stock, a 10-cent spread is 5% gone the moment you buy. Spread skips those names.

Dollar Volume helps too. It multiplies price by the 10-day average volume, so a $3 stock that trades $1 million a day stands apart from one that barely trades. Top Lists (Screeners) update every 15 seconds.

Can I scan penny stocks premarket?

Yes. Add the Price filter to a premarket Top List sorted by Gap (%).

What is a good penny stock screener setting?

Many traders use $1 to $5, a spread under 5 cents and Relative Volume of 2 or more. Adjust it to your rules.

How often does the penny stock list update?

Top Lists update every 15 seconds. Streaming Alerts in TI Pro fire as each move prints.
