Investopedia: Best Short Term Stock Screener, 2024

The short answer: Benzinga Pro and Trade Ideas do different jobs, and plenty of traders pay for both. Benzinga Pro is a fast news service with squawk, chat and research, and its real-time scanner only comes on the $197/mo Essential plan. Trade Ideas is a real-time scanner and screener with Holly AI Signals and OddsMaker backtesting. Benzinga tells you why a stock moved. Trade Ideas tells you what is moving now, across every stock, and whether that setup has historically paid.

Trade Ideas publishes this page and makes one of the two tools.

The real difference

Benzinga explains the move. Trade Ideas finds it.

Benzinga Pro's pitch is speed on headlines. Its pricing page says Benzinga works with company insiders and IR firms and publishes some news 5 to 15 minutes before mainstream outlets, and it sells audio squawk so you can hear headlines without reading them. That is valuable when a catalyst is the trade: earnings, FDA decisions, mergers, analyst calls.

But a headline is not a setup. Most news does not move a stock, and many big moves start before anyone writes about them. Trade Ideas watches price and volume across every U.S. stock as trades print. When a stock trades unusual volume, halts, breaks its premarket high or reclaims VWAP, it shows up in your Streaming Alerts window right then, whether or not there is a story yet.

The price-and-volume side is broad. Our help documents 310 alerts and 249 filters; any alert can run with any set of filters, and each filter takes a minimum and maximum. 191 alerts add a setting of their own, such as the minimum retracement on a gap up reversal, which suits a headline gap that fades. Opening range breakouts and breakdowns fire at 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 minutes, for example the 5-minute breakout or the 15-minute breakdown, and a 5-minute red bar reversal flags a pop that turns. Together they make the possible scans effectively unlimited.

Put simply: Benzinga answers "why is this moving?" Trade Ideas answers "what is moving, and does this pattern usually follow through?" The second question is where OddsMaker and Holly come in.

Workflow

A news-catalyst workflow with both

  • Premarket: skim the Benzinga newsfeed for overnight catalysts. In Trade Ideas, keep a Top List sorted by gap with relative volume and float filters, so you can see which headline stocks the market is actually trading.
  • At the open: let Streaming Alerts tell you when a news stock breaks out, fades its gap or crosses VWAP. You are reacting to price action you can see, not to the headline alone.
  • Before you size up: run the setup through OddsMaker. "Gap up on high relative volume, enter on the premarket-high break, stop under VWAP" is a testable rule. See how it has done lately across all stocks.
  • All day: Holly AI Signals fire as her strategies trigger, often on names that never made a headline.
Be fair

Who Benzinga Pro is better for

  • Pure news traders. If your edge is reacting to headlines first, Benzinga's newsfeed and squawk are built for exactly that, and Basic starts at $37/mo.
  • Traders who listen more than they read. Audio squawk is a real advantage when you are watching charts.
  • Community-driven traders. Essential includes seven chat rooms, including Anne-Marie Baiynd's room, per Benzinga.
  • Research and calendars. Calendars, insider data and Benzinga Edge research are bundled into Essential.
  • Multi-asset news. Benzinga Pro covers news on stocks, options, futures and crypto. Trade Ideas is built around stocks.
What you get on top

What Trade Ideas adds that Benzinga Pro doesn't list

Holly AI Signals

Holly AI Signals fire during the trading day with a symbol, an entry, stop and target. Holly is designed to look for stocks with large long-term potential. Many signals won't work out. You choose whether to exit the same day or hold, based on your risk.

Benzinga AI is a research assistant you ask questions. Holly is a different kind of AI: she watches the market and sends a trade signal when one of her strategies, tested every night, triggers. Holly is on TI Premium.

OddsMaker backtesting

OddsMaker replays real past market events across every stock. Every time your alert fired or a stock met your filters, it becomes a test trade with your entry and exit rules, and you get the trades, win rate and profit factor. A newsfeed cannot tell you that.

Past results, including backtests, don't guarantee future results.

Trading from the scanner

Practice in simulated trading, send live orders from TI Pro through connected brokers (live trading), or let Money Machine automate entries and stops from your own scans.

Options activity in the same window

Trade Ideas also monitors unusual options activity across all stocks. The Web Dashboard has a dedicated channel for it, and so does TI Pro.

Pair a news stock with the Options Volume Today (%) filter to see whether option traders are piling in too.

Data

Real-time quotes vs a real-time scan

Benzinga Pro Basic includes Nasdaq Basic real-time quotes, so prices on your watchlist are live. That is not the same as a scan that watches the whole market. On Benzinga Pro that is the Essential plan's Real-Time Scanner. On Trade Ideas every paid plan streams alerts. Top Lists update every 15 seconds.

If you are okay with static non-refreshing data, Trade Ideas is probably not your best choice.

Bottom line

Which one fits you

Choose Benzinga Pro if headlines and squawk are your edge. Choose Trade Ideas if you want to see what is moving across every stock as it happens, test the setup in OddsMaker, and get Holly's signals. Those signals, with an entry, stop and target on each, come with TI Premium every trading day, and so does OddsMaker. Any plan lets you ask the AI Assistant for a scan in plain English or click one together from 310 alerts and 249 filters; for a rule of your own, the Formula Editor turns a formula into a filter you can test in OddsMaker. If you trade catalysts, run both: news for the why, Trade Ideas for the what and the when. New to trading? For the premium experience with nothing to set up, start on Trade Ideas: every TI Pro plan has the Channel Bar and the AI Assistant, and the Trading Room is free. See Trade Ideas for beginners. FAQ

Trade Ideas vs Benzinga Pro FAQ

Is Benzinga Pro a stock scanner or a news feed?

Mostly a news feed. Benzinga Pro's plans are built around its newsfeed, audio squawk, chat and research. Its Real-Time Scanner, which Benzinga says monitors 3,000+ stocks, is included only on the Essential plan at $197/mo monthly. Trade Ideas is built around scanning: Streaming Alerts and the Top List come with every paid plan.

Does Benzinga Pro have AI trade signals like Holly?

Benzinga Pro Essential includes Benzinga AI, which Benzinga describes as AI-powered research and analysis you can ask questions, plus a Signals feature. Holly is different: Holly AI Signals fire during the trading day with a symbol, an entry, stop and target, from strategies Trade Ideas tests every night.

Can I use Benzinga Pro and Trade Ideas together?

Yes, and they fit well. Benzinga tells you why a stock is moving, and Trade Ideas tells you what is moving and whether that kind of setup has held up in OddsMaker. Many traders keep the Benzinga newsfeed or squawk open beside Trade Ideas Streaming Alerts.

Which is cheaper, Benzinga Pro or Trade Ideas?

It depends on the plan. Benzinga Pro Basic is $37/mo, Streamlined $147/mo and Essential $197/mo, or $1,997/yr for Essential. Trade Ideas is $127/mo for TI Standard or $254/mo for TI Premium, or about $89/mo and $178/mo billed annually. Prices checked Oct 2026.

Does Benzinga Pro have backtesting?

Benzinga Pro's pricing page does not list a backtester. Trade Ideas OddsMaker, on TI Premium, backtests any Streaming Alert or set of Top List filters across all stocks and reports the trades, win rate and profit factor.

Is Trade Ideas good for beginners?

Yes. A beginner who wants the premium experience can start without setting anything up. Whichever Trade Ideas plan you buy, TI Pro comes with the Channel Bar and the Holly AI Assistant. Big momentum movers and S&P 500 stocks moving up fast are two of the ready-made channel themes. With Stock Races, you can watch stocks race each other live. Barrie Einarson leads the free Trading Room for a whole community of traders, and paper trading lets you rehearse with no money at risk. Later, you can grow into Holly AI Signals, Money Machine, OddsMaker and 310 alerts and 249 filters. See our guide for beginners.

Method

How we checked

  • Benzinga's own words. Plan names, monthly and annual rates and the squawk add-on are taken from Benzinga's pricing page, not from reviews.
  • Plan by plan. We tied each feature to the Benzinga plan that lists it, which is why the Real-Time Scanner is shown under Essential.
