Investopedia: Best Short Term Stock Screener, 2024

The short answer: The Short Squeeze Stocks channel in the Trade Ideas Web Dashboard tracks high short float stocks three ways: a High Short Float heat map, the High Short Float Moving Down Top List, and a High Short Float Stock Race that can replay a full trading day in about a minute. It runs in any browser, Mac included.

In one minute

High short float stocks, in one minute

  • Short float is the share of a stock's float that has been sold short. A high number can mean sharp moves both ways.
  • One channel: the Short Squeeze Stocks channel in the Web Dashboard shows a High Short Float heat map, the High Short Float Moving Down Top List (Screener) and a High Short Float Stock Race.
  • Replay the day: the race can replay a past session, compressed into about a minute.

Trader tip

In the video, Daniel opens the Short Squeeze Stocks channel on the October 9, 2026 session. As he puts it, a lot of people don't track this data point, so these are stocks many traders never see.

The Short Squeeze Stocks channel opens the video; the heat map discussion runs from 1:35 and the race replay from 0:40. Data from October 9, 2026, account details blurred.
Heat map

High Short Float heat map

The heat map titled Friday's High Short Float % groups the stocks with high short float. Sort it by change from the close, or by change over the last 30 minutes to see which names ran into the close (1:44 to 1:58 in the video).

Top List (Screener)

High Short Float Moving Down Top List

Above the heat map, the High Short Float Moving Down Top List scrolls the high short float stocks that are falling, with price and change in dollars and percent. Top Lists are Trade Ideas' stock screener; in a live session they update every 15 seconds. The stock detail panel also shows Short Float % and Days to Cover for the stock you pick.

The High Short Float race

Trader tip

The High Short Float % Stock Race turns the list into lanes. On Replay it plays back the October 9 session from the open, compressed into about a minute, so you can see how the day unfolded. GameStop (GME) pops into the race at about 1:12. More on stock market replay and Stock Races.

Risk

Why these moves need a plan

High short float stocks can rebound hard and fall hard. In the video, one chart shows a big breakout, a sharp pullback, another breakout and another pullback. Daniel's point: have risk management in place and be ready to try more than once, keeping each loss small. These lists show where the action is. They do not tell you which way a stock will go.

High short float FAQ

What is short float?

The percentage of a stock's float, the shares available to trade, that has been sold short.

What counts as a high short float?

There is no single cutoff. The Web Dashboard channel groups the stocks with high short float for you, and the stock panel shows each one's Short Float %.

Where do I find high short float stocks in Trade Ideas?

On the Short Squeeze Stocks channel of the Web Dashboard: a heat map, the High Short Float Moving Down Top List (Screener) and a High Short Float Stock Race.

Is a high short float stock a short squeeze?

Not on its own. A high short float can come before a squeeze, a further drop, or nothing much. It is a reason to watch, not a signal.

Can I replay how high short float stocks traded?

Yes. The High Short Float Stock Race can replay a past session from the open, compressed into about a minute.

What is Days to Cover?

Shares sold short divided by average daily volume: roughly how many days it would take short sellers to buy back. The stock panel shows it next to Short Float %.

Are high short float stocks risky?

Yes. They can move sharply both ways, so plan your risk first. Past results, including backtests, don't guarantee future results.
