What is a bullish engulfing pattern?

A bullish engulfing pattern is two candles. The first is a red candle in a move down. The second is a green candle whose body opens lower and closes higher than the whole body of the first one.

In plain terms, buyers took back everything the sellers did on the last candle, and then some.

How traders use it

Step 1: Let the Trade Ideas alert find it

Turn on the 5 Minute Bullish Engulfing alert (NGU5). Trade Ideas finds the two-candle pattern on finished 5 minute candles. See it live in the Web Dashboard.

Step 2: Wait for the trigger

Trader tip

Some traders treat the engulfing close as the trigger. Others wait for the next candle to hold above it.

Step 3: Entry

Entries are often taken near the green candle's close or on a small pullback into its body.

Step 4: Exit

The low of the two candles is a common stop. Many look to the last swing high as a first exit. These are typical choices, not advice.

Tips

  • The bigger the green body compared to the red one, the clearer the pattern.
  • Above-average volume on the green candle helps.
  • In a strong downtrend, many traders want more than one candle of proof.
  • The bearish twin is Bearish Engulfing (NGD5).

How the 5 Minute Bullish Engulfing alert works

This alert signals the appearance of a bullish engulfing pattern on a traditional 5-minute candlestick chart. Components of a bullish engulfing pattern include:

  • The first candlestick is typically a red or bearish candlestick, indicating a downward price movement
  • The second candlestick is a green or bullish candlestick, indicating an upward price movement
  • The bullish candlestick "engulfs" the bearish one, meaning it opens below and closes above the previous candlestick

This pattern often signifies a shift in market sentiment from bearish to bullish, as buyers have taken control and pushed the price higher.

5 Minute Bullish Engulfing Description

Key point

The quality value on a scan using the "5 Minute Bullish Engulfing" represents the grade based on how closely the stock chart matches the ideal shape of the stock pattern. 0% would mean that there was no match at all. Of course, if a stock pattern is this poor a match, then we are unlikely to report an alert. 100% would be an ideal match. Again, this would be an ideal and extreme case. Few if any alerts come close to 100%.
