What Made This Trade Great: Letting the Market Lead the Way

I don’t normally show two-minute charts in these videos, but today they told a story that was too important to ignore. To Subscribe: https://go.trade-ideas.com/SHQ

The first thing I always do is look at the SPY. In the pre-market, things looked fairly calm, nothing too alarming. But once the market opened, the tone shifted quickly. We saw an early move lower, a small bounce, and then continued selling pressure. When you see price action like that, it’s often a sign that the market is starting to lean on stocks, even ones that are still technically strong.

When the broader market starts doing that, I immediately switch my mindset. Instead of looking for strength, I start looking for stocks that may have topped out.

That’s exactly what led me to Weyerhaeuser.

Now, this was still a positive stock overall, but the market environment mattered more at that moment. On the two-minute chart, Weyerhaeuser began to form a sell flag, and with the SPY continuing to push lower, the setup made sense. This wasn’t about forcing a short — it was about aligning with what the market was already doing.

I took the short and was able to ride the move down. As always, risk management came first. I covered some of the position at the VWAP, just in case price decided it couldn’t break through. That locked in gains and reduced risk. I kept some shares on to see if the stock could continue lower as the market pressure persisted.

This trade worked not because of one indicator, but because everything was aligned:

  • Market weakness
  • A stock showing signs of topping
  • A clean intraday sell flag
  • And disciplined trade management

These are the kinds of opportunities you want to take advantage of when the market gives them to you. Pay attention to the tone of the market, stay flexible, and let price action guide your decisions.

That’s what made this trade great.
