OddsMaker: Optimizing a Strategy

Oops! I was so excited to show off the new OddsMaker features in the last OddsMaker video, I forgot to look at the strategy. So in this video we’ll take a quick look at just how powerful the OddsMaker is when it comes to developing a strategy using the layered components found in the OddsMaker. I’ll use the same short sale strategy as in the last video and again hold positions for 45 minutes and backtest 30 days of data. Here is the equity curve that looks very much like the results from the same strategy we ran a couple days ago [Can you insert a screenshot of the results from the previous video here?] By looking at the Blue Equity Curve, we can tell that this strategy has potential to be a winner. However, when commission and slippage are factored into the Red curve, it is clear that some changes need to be made. Looking at the settings and results in the summary, we are trading share sizes of 100, factoring in $7.00 for commission, and $0.25 for slippage. And we are at a negative for projected annual return. So let’s take a closer look at the components of the strategy. As we can tell here, the buying power required is only $5,000. And one of the filters used in the strategy has the maximum spread set to $0.02. So, already the stocks we’re looking at are trading tight in the max spread. So, changing the Slippage setting to $0.10 is still conservative. Since buying power required is only $5,000, it is reasonable to look at increasing the share size traded with this strategy. Look at what happens to the net Equity Curve when we change the share size traded to 500. Also note the projected annual return is now nearly 60%. And now the buying power is still only $25,000. Changing the share sizes to 1000, we can see how the projected annual return increases more and how the equity curve is affected. Only the Trade Ideas OddsMaker has these layered components allowing you to learn what to do with a strategy and see how changing the components affects the returns on-the-fly. It’s not enough to just know that a strategy has the potential to be a winner, but how the components of the trade factor into your returns.

Top List: Symbol Column & Right Click

We’ve added some new features to the Top List Windows in Trade Ideas Pro to make them easier to use. Now, if you have columns that are not visible and scroll to the view them, the Symbol Column stays anchored on the left. To remove the Symbol Column anchor, just click on the column header and it will be disabled. Click on the column header again to add the Symbol Column anchor back to the window. Some other new useful features have been added to the right-click selection menu when you right-click over a filter icon column header. You now have some new choices. You can go to a help for the filter, go to configure the filter, choose to server sort the filter, or sort the column by the filter. Choosing configure takes you directly to the configuration menu for setting the minimum and maximum for the filter. You may choose to change the sorting. If you select to Server Sort by the filter, the server sort configuration window opens where you can select to sort it by biggest or smallest on top.
